Three thousand Washington students have been awarded the first ever Washington Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship program, which is a combination of funds from Boeing, Microsoft, and Washington state and is administered by the College Success Foundation, is meant to encourage students from low and middle income backgrounds to earn degrees in the STEM fields.
Each recipient will receive be awarded a scholarship of $1,000 dollars each, which is renewable for five years for beginning college freshmen.
According to the Seattle Times, the Washington Opportunity Board has set a goal of raising $1 billion for the scholarship from public and private contributions by 2020.
