With the passage of I-1240, Washington became the 42nd state allowing charter schools. Under the initiative, a nonprofit, nonreligious organization can apply to start a charter with approval from either the State Board of Education or the newly created state charter commission. The law allows for the creation of up to 40 public charter schools over the next five years. Learn more at the Washington State Charter Schools Association website.
