WA kids need heroes like you! #GiveBIG to LEV on May 10th

In a rural community in northern Washington lives an unsuspecting super hero. Her name is Liz, and when she became a special education teacher fourteen years ago, she did not know that she would also become an advocate, a super hero, for her students.

Liz reflects, “No matter how wonderful your teaching program is, nothing quite prepares you for your first classroom! I was surprised to discover I was now running a one-room schoolhouse for students with special needs, all at different levels. Most of these students were low income and received free or reduced lunch. My staff and I make sure students have clean clothes, extra food, and social and emotional supports. Without these basic needs being met, learning would be impossible.

I love my job but I don’t always have the resources my students need, because our school doesn’t receive the funding it needs. There isn’t usually a debate about the need for additional services, but whether our school will receive the funding to provide the student what she needs.

The League of Education Voters field team collaborates with communities across the state to listen, collect, and amplify stories like Liz’s to support legislators in making informed decisions about public education. Will you support LEV’s work with your donation today to ensure the voices of our community are heard by legislators?

Schedule your gift today and your donation will be doubled! Thanks to the generous matching gift of an anonymous donor every dollar given through GiveBIG will be matched up to $5,000.

Thank you for all you do for Washington’s kids.

Finding a way forward

Finding a way forward. At the League of Education Voters, we believe a student’s education should be a continuum with seamless transitions. 2014 was a successful year as we worked to improve public education throughout Washington state. We are pleased to release our 2014 annual report, Finding a way forward, and we invite you to read highlights from the past year.

In 2014, we also released our vision, A way forward, which calls for a new definition of basic education that includes early learning, strategic investments in K–12 education, and at least two years of postsecondary education for each Washington student.

While some may suggest that this definition is more than we can afford, we believe that we can’t afford not to make this investment. Too many kids arrive at kindergarten already behind. At the other end of the education spectrum, all evidence points to the need for a postsecondary degree or certificate in preparation for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

A high-quality public education system from early learning through higher education is critical to ensuring a strong home-grown workforce and state economy.

Washington state has the people, resources, and innovative spirit to create the best public education system in the world, but it’s going to take tough decisions from each of us to make it a reality. During 2015, we are engaging policymakers, community members, parents, and educators across the state to discuss this vision and how, working together, we can make it a reality.

We invite you to join us.

Read or download our 2014 annual report.

Kaysiana and Midheta share their stories

The College Bound Scholarship Program was established by our Legislature eight years ago. College Bound provides scholarships to low-income and foster care students who enroll in middle school, keep their grades up, and stay out of trouble.

More than 212,000 students have signed up, and the program has had a huge impact. Enrollment has shown to positively impact high school academic performance, graduation rates, as well as college going rates and persistence. Of students enrolling in higher education, College Bound students are almost 50 percent more likely to attend a four-year college than low-income students statewide.

We strongly support College Bound and were proud to serve on the state’s College Bound Task Force last year. During the past few years, we have worked with many partners, including the College Success Foundation, Washington State Student Achievement Council, and the Road Map Project, to amplify College Bound’s impact and success and advocate for ongoing state support.

This program changes lives.

We were fortunate to hear the stories of two College Bound students this morning at our annual breakfast. We heard from Kaysiana Hazelwood, a senior at West Seattle High School, and from Midheta Djuderija, a student at the University of Washington.

Below are their incredible stories, told in their own words. (more…)
